ABO Announces Newly Certified/Recertified Orthodontists
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) certified or recertified 66 orthodontists following their participation in the ABO Traditional Case Clinical Examination in June 2019 in St. Louis. The Clinical Examination is the second of a two-part certification process that also includes prior completion of the Written Examination. ABO Board Certification is a voluntary credential that represents an orthodontist’s personal and public commitment to the standards of specialty practice and lifelong learning.
“Board certification demonstrates a commitment to excellence in orthodontics to the public and colleagues,” said Dr. Nicholas D. Barone, ABO president. “I congratulate all of our newly certified and recertified orthodontists.”
The June 2019 exam marked the final administration of the Traditional Case-based Clinical Examination. All future examinations will utilize the Scenario-based Oral Clinical Examination.
To learn more about ABO certification and the new Scenario-Based Oral Clinical Examination, visit www.AmericanBoardOrtho.com. The website offers information about the Clinical and Written Examinations, including study aids and registration information. Currently, approximately 46 percent of AAO practicing orthodontists are ABO certified.

About the ABO
The ABO is the global leader in orthodontic board certification and sets the standards of care for excellence in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. The ABO’s mission is to elevate the quality of orthodontic care for the public by promoting excellence through certification, education and professional collaboration. Founded in 1929, the ABO was the first specialty board in dentistry. It is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the American Association of Orthodontists. To learn more, visit www.americanboardortho.com.
The certificate issued by the ABO signifies a certification of attainment. It does not confer any legal qualification, privilege, or license to practice orthodontics. It is not a professional or academic degree. In essence, board certification is a process by which an individual orthodontist is voluntarily examined by his/her peers as to orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. The passage of the examination process is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
