Letter from the COGA Chair
Dr. Mariana Haughey
The work of the Council on Government Advocacy (COGA) is often felt more than it is seen, quietly shaping the environment in which orthodontists practice, while protecting the integrity of our profession. Recent efforts reflect a group that is not only responsive to immediate challenges, but increasingly focused on long-term strategy, stability, and meaningful engagement.
At the federal level, COGA continues to advocate on issues that directly impact us orthodontists and our patients. Efforts surrounding the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act and student loan reform highlight a deep awareness of both patient access to care and the financial realities facing new orthodontists. With student debt often far exceeding the proposed federal caps, advocacy efforts have expanded by bringing together partners and exploring state-level solutions. This work helps ensure the next generation of orthodontists isn’t facing unnecessary barriers because of these policies.
Teledentistry remains another key focus. Rather than resisting innovation, COGA is working to guide it by supporting legislation that prioritizes patient safety and reinforces the importance of a direct doctor-patient relationship. Even where immediate legislative success is unlikely, these efforts are intentionally strategic, laying the groundwork for future protections.
At the state level, advocacy efforts are broad and evolving. From defending specialty advertising to monitoring regulatory changes and emerging AI legislation across dozens of states, COGA is ensuring that orthodontics continues to be defined by sound clinical judgment. The development of an AI position framework further reinforces the principle that technology should support and not replace the clinician.
Equally important is the investment in people. Through the National Advocacy Network and strong participation in advocacy meetings, COGA is building a more connected and engaged community of orthodontists. This grassroots involvement ensures that advocacy is not limited to a few voices, but strengthened by many.
Together, these efforts reflect a profession that is actively shaping its future with intention, coordination, and a shared commitment to patient care.
