This past January, I had the distinct honor and privilege of representing NESO at the Leadership Development Conference (LDC) in Marco Island, Florida. The LDC provided an invaluable opportunity to deepen my understanding of leadership, gain insight into how the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is addressing key issues affecting its members, and connect with both current and emerging leaders across various constituent and component levels.
The conference agenda was thoughtfully curated, featuring a series of engaging lectures and discussions designed to equip attendees with essential leadership skills and strategic insights. Among the many impactful sessions, those focused on high performance, innovation, and the interplay of success and failure resonated with me the most. As the world continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, our specialty is no exception. From the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence to the growing conversation surrounding microplastics in clear aligner therapy, change is constant in the orthodontic community. My experience at the LDC reinforced the importance of staying informed, embracing uncertainty, and adapting to new challenges in order to remain at the forefront of our profession.
One of the most enriching aspects of the conference was the roundtable discussion with constituent members. Each table brought together members of the AAO Board of Trustees, senior staff, and LDC attendees representing a wide range of experience levels. The opportunity to engage directly with senior leaders and hear their perspectives on leadership was both inspiring and insightful. Their willingness to share personal experiences, challenges, and lessons learned made for an incredibly welcoming and motivating environment.
Attending the LDC was an invaluable experience that broadened my understanding of leadership in the orthodontic profession. It reaffirmed my commitment to continuous learning and professional growth while strengthening my appreciation for the collaborative efforts that drive our specialty forward. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated and look forward to applying the knowledge and connections gained to contribute meaningfully to the orthodontic community.
